ABSee / Guides / CRO tools
GuideCRO tools, ranked by real adoption. Not by affiliate deal.
The testing tools ecommerce brands run most are Optimizely, AB Tasty and VWO, in that order, by adoption seen on real sites. But a CRO stack is four jobs: testing, behaviour analytics, research, and evidence from other brands' experiments.

How to read this
- Rank is the order of tools by the share of brands with a detected testing or personalisation tool that run each one. The rounded shares are in the market share report.
- Bands group those shares: very common, common, occasional and rare. Two tools in the same band are close; the order inside a band matters less than the band.
- The sample is brands in the ABSee record — mostly mid-to-large ecommerce, weighted to fashion and to Europe; only tools that load in the browser are visible, so server-side testing is undercounted.
Four jobs, not one tool
Most lists of CRO tools are ranked by who pays the best referral fee. This one ranks the testing tools by how often they turn up on real ecommerce sites, and says so. ABSee takes no affiliate fees.
"CRO tool" also covers four different jobs. A testing tool runs your experiments. Behaviour analytics shows where visitors struggle. Research tells you what usually works for users. Evidence from other brands tells you what the market already tested, and what it kept. Each job answers a different question, and few teams get all four from one product.
1. Testing and personalisation
This is the only job with adoption data behind it, which is why the table above covers it alone. The tools fall into a few kinds. Experimentation platforms are built for marketing and CRO teams to test changes on the website, usually with a visual editor. Personalisation suites show different content to different audiences, with testing as one feature among many. Product experimentation and feature-flag tools are run by engineering teams from code. Shopify apps test within a Shopify store's own theme, prices and offers.
Among brands in the ABSee record, Optimizely ranks first, then AB Tasty and VWO. Optimizely and AB Tasty are very common; the rest are less widespread. A high rank shows what teams like yours have already chosen. It is not a verdict on which tool is best for you.
For profiles of each testing tool and who it suits, see the best A/B testing tools guide.
2. Behaviour analytics and session replay
ABSee has no adoption data for this job, so these are well-known options, listed without a ranking. Session replay and heatmap tools such as Contentsquare, Hotjar (now Contentsquare), Microsoft Clarity and FullStory show how visitors move through a page and where they stop. Product analytics tools such as Amplitude and Mixpanel track journeys, funnels and retention across many sessions.
These tools find the problem: the step where people drop out, the button nobody taps. They do not tell you what to change, and they cannot show what happens when you change it.
3. Research and UX benchmarks
ABSee has no adoption data here either. Two names come up most often. Baymard Institute publishes ecommerce UX guidelines from usability research, and reviews sites against them. GoodUI publishes a library of UI patterns built from A/B test results. Both tell you what should work in general, not what specific brands chose to test.
4. Evidence from other brands' experiments
The fourth job is knowing what the market has already tested before you spend your own traffic. Disclosure: ABSee is ours.
ABSee is experimentation intelligence for ecommerce: a record of 10,000+ experiments run by 1,150+ brands on their live sites, with the page before, the version tested, and whether it was kept. It works inside Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, so you ask in plain words and get real experiments back.
Other services in this space include DoWhatWorks and ABWatcher, which watch brands' websites for live tests. Our comparison page sets the options side by side.
How to choose
- By traffic. A test needs enough visitors in each version to give a clear answer. With modest traffic you can run fewer tests, so the tests you pick matter more, and research and outside evidence earn their place earlier.
- By team. If marketing or CRO runs the tests, an experimentation platform with a visual editor fits. If engineers run them, a product experimentation or feature-flag tool fits better, and much of the testing may happen on the server.
- By stack. On Shopify, the Shopify apps fit the store's own pieces. If you already pay for a suite from Adobe or Salesforce, its testing tool may already be in the contract. If your data lives in a warehouse, look at tools that analyse results there.
Whatever you pick, the testing tool runs the test. It does not tell you which test to run first. That is where research, behaviour analytics and other brands' experiments come in.

Questions
What are the best CRO tools?
It depends on the job. For testing, the tools ecommerce brands in the ABSee record run most are Optimizely, AB Tasty and VWO, in that order. For behaviour analytics, research and outside evidence there is no adoption ranking here; pick by the job you need done.
Which testing tool do most ecommerce brands use?
Optimizely ranks first among brands in the ABSee record with a detected testing or personalisation tool, and is very common there. The full shares are in the experimentation platform market share report.
Is this list sponsored?
No. ABSee is not a testing tool, takes no affiliate fees and is not paid by any vendor on this page. Testing tools are ranked by how often they are seen on real ecommerce sites.
Do I need a tool for all four jobs?
Not on day one. Most teams start with a testing tool and one behaviour analytics tool. Research and outside evidence matter most when you have more ideas than traffic to test them.
Does the ranking include server-side testing?
Only partly. ABSee sees tools that load in a visitor's browser. Tests decided on the server never reach the browser, so tools used mainly that way are undercounted.
We run VWO on a Shopify store. What have brands like us tested on the product page this year?
Works in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini once ABSee is connected.
